When you arrive to Cusco we will pick you up from the airport and take you to your hotel. We then suggest having a rest and some lunch in the hotel in order to avoid altitude sickness. In the afternoon, we will have a guided city tour of Cusco visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun or Korikancha. Then we will drive out of the city to visit the Inka sites of Kenko, Tambomachay, Puca Pucara and the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman, strategically built on a hill overlooking Cusco and famous for its enormous carved stones, some of them standing over 9m / 30ft high and weighing over 350 tons. We will then return to the hotel.
An excursion to the "Sacred Valley of the Inkas", a succession of picturesque towns, agricultural terraces and archaeological sites. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, we´ll have the opportunity to bargain with vendors or take a stroll at Pisac's typical Indian market, with a catholic mass service on Sunday (celebrated in Quechua, the native language).
We will have lunch at a local restaurant in the Sacred Valley. In the afternoon we will pass through Calca and Urubamba to arrive at the Inka Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo, which was built to guard the entry of this part of the valley and protect it from enemies of the lower jungles; consisting of a series of superimposed terraces of carved stones accessed by long staircases.
We will have the opportunity to walk through the quaint streets of the nearby town and the religious and agricultural centre of the Inka Empire. You will get a clear idea of the strategic importance of this military base. On our way back to Cusco we will visit the picturesque Andean village of Chinchero where the remains of what was the royal hacienda of Tupac Inka Yupanqui lies. You will get to admire its well preserved Inka Wall at the Main Square and visit the beautiful colonial temple built on Inka foundations. We will arrive back to Cusco in the afternoon.
We will pick you up from your hotel very early in the morning. We will then take a bus to Urubamba, one hour away from Cusco where we will have breakfast. Then we will go to Chilca where our journey on the Inka Trail leading to Machu Picchu will start. Next, after about 3 hours of walking, we will stop in order to have lunch. We will then continue towards our first camp in Wayllabamba. We will then have a guided tour of the Archaeological Complex of Llactapata. Dinner and over night camping will follow.
After breakfast we will start walking to the highest point of the Inka Trail where we will be able to observe different microclimates before arriving at the valley of Warmiwañusca at 4.200 meters above sea level. Here we will have lunch. We continue walking as far as Pacaymayu where we will have dinner and camp for the second night.
After breakfast we will start walking for about 45 minutes untill we arrive at the second most important valley on the Inka Trail (3.850 meters above sea level). We will then take a visit to the Archaeological Complex of Runkurakay. Then, we will visit the citadel of Sayacmarca, then we will start walking again towards the ruins of Puyupatamarca. We will have lunch and then start walking again to visit the beautiful Inka citadel of Wiñaywayna. We will have dinner and camp for the night.
After breakfast we will start our last day of walking in order to visit the famous Inka City of Machu Picchu. First we will arrive at Inti Punko, from where we can appreciate the City of Machu Picchu from above. We´ll enter the City and upon arrival, we will participate in a guided tour, visiting the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial (the most important preserved Intihuatana), the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and various burial grounds. After the tour we will have time to stroll around the archaeological site at our leisure. In the afternoon we will take a train back to Cusco and we will transfer you back to your hotel. You will have a free night to do what you want.
We will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you back to the airport in order to take your flight back to Lima.
Note: During the hike you will have to carry your sleeping bag, sleeping pad and your personal stuff (e.g. backpack). You can request availability for a personal porter.
