“Peru was chosen as the Best Culinary Destination in South America 2016.”

The prestigious award was presented last night at the Swissotel hotel in our capital. In addition, Lima was chosen as the Best Meetings Tourism Destination according to the 2016 World Travel Awards South America.

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) and President of the Board of Directors of PROMPERÚ, Magali Silva Velarde-Álvarez, announced that Peru was designated as the Best Culinary Destination in South America in the regional edition of the 2016 World Travel Awards (WTA), obtaining the award for the fifth consecutive time.

Prestigious cuisine. “These are distinctions for all Peruvians because it is the result of hard work that we carry out hand in hand with the private sector and that involves a wide productive chain. The prestige of our cuisine is maintained and consolidated. Our country’s promotional efforts are recognized and the leadership in meetings tourism is reaffirmed,” she said in a video that was broadcast during the awards ceremony.

Other awards. The award recognizing Peruvian cuisine adds to the one given this year to the Central restaurant, led by chef Virgilio Martínez, who once again ranked fourth on the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants; the choice of Maido, by Mitsuharu Tsumura, in 13th place, and Astrid & Gastón in 30th place.

More awards. Minister Velarde-Álvarez also highlighted the awards received for Lima as the Best Meetings Tourism Destination and for the Peruvian Commission for the Promotion of Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ) as the Best Tourism Office in South America. In the 2015 ranking of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Peru leads the growth of international meetings in the region and remains in 39th place.

Award ceremony. The award ceremony took place at the Swissotel hotel in Lima and the sector was represented by the main hotel chains, tour operators, and tourism-related guilds from Peru and the rest of South America.
