“On December 2, 2023, our country received two distinctions in the latest edition of the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2023, reported by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (Promperú). These awards, known in the industry as the Oscars of Tourism according to the Wall Street Journal, are a benchmark for excellence in the travel and tourism sector.
Highlighting its cultural impact, Peru was chosen, for the fifth time, as the world’s leading cultural destination, surpassing countries that have received this award such as Cambodia (Asia), Cuba (Caribbean), Spain (Europe), and Vietnam, which holds the titles of Best Cultural City Destination of Asia 2023 (Hoi An) and Best Cultural Tourist Attraction of Asia 2023 (Tam Chuc Complex).
Furthermore, Peru won the award for the eleventh time as the best culinary destination in these renowned awards, leaving behind 15 competing countries, including major culinary references such as Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Italy, France, Japan, and Thailand.
The executive president of Promperú, Angélica Matsuda, expressed her pride and satisfaction for these achievements.”
“These awards are a reflection and recognition of the collective effort of all Peruvians and highlight the country’s cultural and gastronomic diversity,” she declared.
Furthermore, she emphasized that these recognitions are a boost to continue promoting and directing sectoral strategies to Peru’s diverse tourism offerings.

The WTA event celebrates excellence in various aspects of tourism and travel worldwide and establishes a standard of quality recognized internationally in the sector. These awards are a testament to Peru’s commitment to excellence in hospitality and the richness of its cultural and culinary traditions.
In August of this year, our country was honored with awards in the regional categories of the World Travel Awards. It took home the titles of Best Culinary Destination in South America, Best Cultural Destination in South America, and Best Leading Destination in South America. In a particularly notable category, Machu Picchu was also awarded as the Best Tourist Attraction in South America for its historical significance and unique beauty on the continent.
