Embark on the captivating 9 Day Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu, an extraordinary and enchanting journey through the Cusco region. This trek, considered one of the most beautiful and intriguing, takes you along less-visited pathways and Inca Trails, offering breathtaking scenery and visits to two major Inca sites in the area.
The adventure commences by following the traditional route to Choquequirao. However, instead of retracing your steps, the trek continues on, eventually converging with the final section of the Salkantay trek, ultimately leading you to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. This comprehensive trek promises a rich blend of history, natural beauty, and the exploration of lesser-known paths, creating an unforgettable experience from Choquequirao to the iconic Machu Picchu.
Itinerary
**Day 1: Cusco – Cachora – Santa Rosa**
Embark on your journey from the quaint village of Cachora, a scenic 4-hour drive from Cusco. The trail descends into the Apurimac Valley, treating you to mesmerizing views of snow-capped peaks and the expansive Apurimac Valley. After a few hours of trekking, the ancient city of Choquequirao becomes visible on the far side of the valley. Our serene campsite for the night, Santa Rosa (2200m / 7215ft.), situated on the opposite bank of the Apurimac River, provides a peaceful setting amidst captivating landscapes.
**Day 2: Santa Rosa – Choquequirao**
Prepare for the trek’s most challenging day as we ascend the opposite side of the Apurimac Valley, covering about 800m / 2624ft. over 14km / 8.7 miles in hot and humid conditions. The arduous climb rewards us with breathtaking views and diverse flora and fauna, including bromeliads, orchids, and bamboo. Our campsite near Choquequirao (3050m / 10,005ft.) offers a stunning sunset view, with the possibility of spotting majestic Condors soaring over the valley.
**Day 3: Choquequirao – Pinchinuyoc**
Today is dedicated to exploring the extensive Choquequirao. A guided tour of the significant sites precedes some free time for personal exploration. With only 25% of Choquequirao excavated, this Inca marvel hides many secrets. After lunch, we trek towards the pass above the city, descending to the Rio Blanco valley. Our campsite at the Pinchinuyoc terraces (2487m / 8160 ft.) promises a unique setting surrounded by the remnants of ancient Inca culture.
**Day 4: Pinchinuyoc – Maizal**
Descending to the river below, we take a refreshing dip in the calm waters before climbing up to our campsite at Maizal (2891m / 9488 ft.). En route, witness a variety of native plants and birds, accompanied by splendid views of the lush Rio Blanco valley. Optionally, explore a nearby Inca site upon reaching Maizal.
**Day 5: Maizal – Yanama**
The trek to Yanama unfolds through breathtaking landscapes, showcasing diverse flora and fauna. Pass through original Inca Trails, abandoned gold and silver mines, and small communities. Our campsite at Yanama (3520m / 11549 ft.) provides an immersive experience as we stay on the land of a local family. An opportunity to learn about their customs and traditions awaits after lunch.
**Day 6: Yanama – Colpapampa**
Embarking on the journey to the highest pass on the trek (4840m / 15879 ft.), we traverse the high puna (barren grasslands) and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including the formidable Salkantay (6270m / 20570 ft.). Descending to Colpapampa (2900m / 9514 ft.), our campsite awaits amidst the diverse Andean landscapes.
**Day 7: Colpapampa – La Playa**
Trekking along the Lluskamayo River, we pass through vibrant areas with coffee and fruit plantations. The village of La Playa (2400m / 7874ft.) becomes our resting place for the night, offering a well-connected locale with the option to visit nearby hot springs.
**Day 8: La Playa – Llactapata – Aguas Calientes**
Embark on the final stretch before reaching Aguas Calientes, stopping at the Inca site of Llactapata. The original Inca Trail leads us to Llactapata, providing stunning views of Machu Picchu. Following a tour and exploration, we descend to the Hydroelectric Station, catching a train to Aguas Calientes.
**Day 9: Machu Picchu!**
An early start takes us to Machu Picchu as it opens. A comprehensive 2-hour guided tour unveils the mysteries of the Incas. Afterward, explore the citadel at your pace, and if permitted, climb either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain. The afternoon journey includes a train to Ollantaytambo and a bus back to Cusco.
