Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Km82 – Ayapata
The Inca Trail adventure begins with an early start at 4:30 am from Regocijo Square in the historical center of Cusco. The group travels by bus for approximately 3:30 hours, enjoying scenic views in the Sacred Valley. Around 6:30 am, there’s a stop for breakfast (not included), lasting about 30 minutes.
The first day of the Inca Trail is relatively easy, covering 14 km. The trail climbs gently up the Cusichaca Valley, passing by the Inca site of Llactapata. Trekkers enjoy views of the snow-capped peak Veronica and encounter a variety of native plant life and birds. The campsite for the night is Ayapata (3300m / 10829ft), strategically located for a smoother ascent to the pass the next day.
Accommodation: Camping facilities (Tents for every two hikers)
Distance: 12kms/7.5mls (about 7 hours hiking)
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
Day 2: Ayapata – Chaquicocha
Considered one of the hardest days, day 2 involves crossing two high passes, with Dead Woman’s Pass being the highest at 4200m / 13779ft. Despite the challenges, the enthusiastic guides and porters provide support. Trekkers visit two Inca sites, Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca, and traverse the Polylepsis forests, hoping to spot White Tailed Deer. The campsite is at Chaquicocha (3600m / 11800ft), offering beautiful sunset views over the mountains.

Distance: 16kms/10mls (about 10 hours hiking)
Difficulty: Moderate/challenging
Day 3: Chaquicocha – Winay Wayna
Day 3 involves a more relaxed trek through lush cloud forests and beautiful scenery. With visits to Inca sites Phuyupatamarca and Winay Wayna, this day showcases the stunning beauty of the Inca Trail. The campsite is at Winay Wayna (2680m / 8792ft), and after an early arrival, trekkers have an extended guided tour.

Distance: 10kms/6.2mls (about 5 hours hiking)
Difficulty: Moderate
Day 4: Winay Wayna – Machu Picchu
The highlight of the trek, Day 4 starts early with a visit to the Sun Gate, offering fantastic views of Machu Picchu. A guided tour explores the citadel, and afterward, there’s free time for personal exploration. Trekkers with permits can climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain. In the afternoon, the group takes the train back to Ollantaytambo and then a bus back to Cusco.
